Alisson and Ibrahima Konate clash over goal as Gary Neville slams Liverpool defending

Send Push

Alisson and Ibrahima Konate produced a calamitous moment to allow Wolves to equalize against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Reds had largely been in control of their Molineux encounter and were even leading through a Konate header before the Frenchman got himself in a horrendous mix-up shortly after half-time, allowing Wolves back into the game as a result of their own mess.

As Konate tried to shepherd a long ball out of play while under pressure from an opposition player, he quickly realized the ball wouldn't make it and tried to encourage Alisson to come and claim it from him just inside his own area.

But a horrendous mix-up saw Wolves steal back possession and, after one shot was scuffed and a bit of pinball ensued inside the box, Rayan Ait-Nouri ran in to finish past the despairing Trent Alexander-Arnold on the line, leaving both Alisson and Konate red-faced as the rest of their team fumed.

Yet it wasn't just the other nine players on the pitch who were left dumbfounded at what had just happened, with former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also unimpressed from what he's just seen as he spoke on co-commentary for Sky Sports' coverage of the match.

"I just said Liverpool are strolling around - and this is just sloppy from them," Neville began. Van Dijk stands, Konate goes back. A bit of dilly-dallying around by Konate who tries to shepherd it towards his goalkeeper and then it's just a mess. But it's a good mess for Wolves.

"Look at Konate - what are you doing? Then Alisson gets caught out of his goal, scrappy." He added: "That's what you get in football when you take things for granted. But Liverpool, at 1-0, you're never safe. I can't think why he would stop ."

Shortly after the ball hit the back of the net and Wolves continued to celebrate, the cameras panned to Alisson and Konate in discussion following their mix-up, with Liverpool's goalkeeper visibly agitated by the decisions from his defender.

Thankfully for both players, Mohamed Salah converted a penalty just four minutes later to put the Reds back in front in the Black Country, having seen Diogo Jota wrestled to the ground after a ball into the box from Alexander-Arnold.

It's safe to say a collective sigh of relief could be felt all throughout the Liverpool team - but mainly from Alisson and Konate at the back who had just seen their teammates bail them out of jail almost instantaneously.
