British shoppers furious as another snack favourite shrinks in size but not price

Send Push

Whether they're a party snack, or a midweek treat - Pringles are undoubtedly among the nation's favourite products. And yet, the beloved crisp has now caused quite the online storm, as fans claim its tubs have fallen victim to 'shrinkflation'.

Shrinkflation occurs when a product decreases in weight, size or quantity while the cost remains the same, drops slightly, or controversially even increases. Posting to social media, fans shared images of the tubs, remarking on their notable size decrease and warning consumers to 'beware'.

"Exactly the same item, exactly the same price but spot the difference," the poster wrote, as another chimed in: "It's just another way to rip us off without looking like they are." One even added: "Unfortunately shrinkflation has been going on for years and I can’t see it changing any time soon."

The formerly 200g can of Pringles – which was available until 2022 – now weighs in at 165g. Sadly, Pringles isn't the only firm under fire for alleged shrinkflation, as just last week shoppers also called for a boycott of the Celebrations box.

On a Manchester-based Facebook page dedicated to supermarket deals, one user shared images of what's alleged to be three Celebrations' tubs over time. Notably, there's a stark difference in each of their sizes, which garnered a flood of outrage almost 100 days away from Christmas.

One user wrote: "I've stopped buying them as I'm getting only half of the tin for the same price. I buy bars of chocolate instead. Better value for the money," as another added: "Boycott them and don’t buy then they’ll be giving them away in January."

Remarkably, this isn't the first time the bosses at Celebrations have come under fire for allegedly shrinking its chocolate tubs over the years. According to The Sun, this year its 600mg container was slashed to 550g which is reportedly the equivalent to losing 'five sweets'.

At the time, Mars said that a spike in raw material costs was to blame, while adding that a smaller tub helps to reduce plastic waste.

In response to the more recent shrinkflation allegations, a Mars Wrigley UK spokesperson echoed this. They added: "We have been actively trying to find ways to absorb the rising costs of raw materials and operations, as we know the increase in the cost of living has impacted both consumers and businesses across the UK.

"Unfortunately, the growing pressures mean that more needs to be done. Reducing the size of our products is not a decision we have taken lightly but it is necessary for shoppers to still be able to enjoy their favourite

"Celebrations treats without compromising on quality or taste. The tub itself has also reduced in order to reduce the plastic used in the packaging by 17% to help us meet our sustainability targets as a business."

Jam Press has also contacted Kellanova for comment on Pringles.
