Celebrity Escape to the Country host brands couple's house search 'a lost cause'

Escape to the Country's Alistair Appleton didn't hold back during Friday's (September 27) show, calling the property search a 'lost cause'.

He was attempting to assist Bucks Fizz legend Cheryl Baker and her spouse Steve in their quest for a dream home, which has eluded them for years.

Cheryl went on to say: "We still haven't found the house we want to live in. We're quite different when we are looking at a house because I like to be kind and Steve's quiet.." before Steve interjected with, "I like to be practical."

The iconic couple, who got together while on tour in the 70s, wanted to downscale from their Kent abode after their twin daughters flew the nest.

With £900,000 to spend, they had a list of must-haves including three to four bedrooms for family visits, a spacious kitchen, an easy-to-maintain garden, a spot for growing veggies, and enough space for their dog's escapades.

While Alistair rounded up suitable homes that ticked the boxes, Cheryl and Steve faced a snag: the houses were too often "too small", casting doubt over hosting capacity and where Cheryl could keep her "stage clothes", reports Wales Online.

Alister didn't hesitate to highlight the couple's predicament as he noted: "They're on the horns of that classic downsizer dilemma. On paper you want to downsize but then when you see a house that is actually smaller and a kitchen that's smaller, it's like it's too small."

While taking in the outdoor space, Cheryl gushed: "The garden is absolutely stunning, it's beautiful." To which Alister remarked: "Look, there's even a vegetable patch."

Cheryl admitted: "Yes it's beautiful but it's too small really for both of us." Observing Steve's body language, Alister commented: "Steve has folded his arms. It's a lost cause."

Eventually, they settled on the last mystery home located in Herstmonceux. Alister informed viewers: "I thought we might have lost them with the houses being too small despite wanting to downsize but then the mystery house came through with flying colours and this could be the one for them."
