The son of the next President of the United States has mocked in a social media post warning his “allowance” is going to be taken away.
Jr’s post suggests that on-going US military funding given to following the Russian invasion is due to be withdrawn when his father takes office in January.
Ukraine has been in a desperate war against the neighbouring superpower since Russia's surprise invasion two years and nine months go. According to some estimates the Russian death toll stands at over 164,500 since then while Ukrainian forces have suffered losses of 59,955 fighters. Many more soldiers are injured or missing as are many thousands of civilians.
During his election campaign Trump repeatedly criticised the large sums of money spent by the Biden administration on helping Ukraine following ’s February 2022 invasion - a figure estimated to be over $64 billion according to a report from the US State Department.
In a rare appearance on social media mocked Zelensky, sharing a post showing the Ukrainian leader looking sad with the caption “POV: You’re 38 Days from losing your allowance.”
In 38 days after the meme was posted it will be December 17, the day electors in each state meet to cast their votes for President and Vice President based on the results counted on Election Day.
In the highly edited video clip first shared by one time republican presidential hopeful Sarah Palin, Zelensky can be seen standing next to Trump looking stony faced before the clip turns black and white and dollar bills rain down from the ceiling.
On Sunday Trump Jr also backed calls to keep “neocons and war hawks” out of the White House in a post shared on X, hours after Trump denied former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cabinet jobs - both are pro-Ukraine.
The president has spoken to both Zelensky and Putin since winning the presidential race. A 25-minute chat with the president-elect on Wednesday “didn’t leave Zelensky with a feeling of despair,” a source told Axios news agency.
Meanwhile on Thursday the soon-to-be president spoke to Putin, a conversation in which Trump is said to have advised the Russian president not to escalate the war in Ukraine further, according to the Washington Post.
The Biden White House is said to be planning to send the remaining $6 billion in congressionally-allotted aid to Kyiv before Trump takes power in 70 days’ time.
Trump described Zekensky as “maybe the greatest salesman of any politician that’s ever lived” at a Detroit campaign rally In June. “Every time he comes to our country, he walks away with $60 billion,” he added.
Later in the same speech he added he would “have that settled prior to taking the White House as president-elect.”
