End of the Sky dish? Huge TV update issued to UK homes as future of satellite confirmed

There's no hiding the fact the future of watching TV is via your broadband. All of Sky's latest products including its Glass TV and neat Stream box have ditched the dish and moved over to the web instead. In fact, take a trip to the firm's website and you'll see little mention of ageing Sky Q boxes which require a dish to be strapped to the wall to work.

This move isn't surprising as Sky's latest devices can all be self installed which means there's no need for an army of engineers to be whizzing up and down the country. There's also far less fuss when fitting streaming gadgets and the aren't affected by weather conditions.

With so much attention on streaming, those with devices such as Sky Q and Sky HD might have been concerned that they might be forced to switch over to this new way of watching the telly,

However, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Sky has just announced that has signed a new contract with SES - a signal provider that beams Sky content around the UK. This deal will keep satellite dishes in good working order until at least 2029.

That means homes with Sky Q boxes plugging into the wall can be safe in the knowledge that they keep working for at least another 5 years.

So, it seems like your dish is safe for the foreseeable future.
