Jamie Carragher has , calling for the club to sign a new keeper after what he described as a "poor" display by Robert Sanchez in the match against .

Although just missed out, where Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the spot and Nicolas Jackson leveled post-VAR consultation, it was Curtis Jones’ decider that sparked controversy.

Carragher, the Liverpool legend speaking on Sky Sports, singled out Sanchez for criticism: "It's so poor from Chelsea's point. Reece James ambles in there. The goalkeeper is so poor. It was a poor touch from Curtis Jones really, and it's poor from the goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez."

He continued with advice for Sanchez, clearly expecting more from the Chelsea man: "Sanchez has got to go and win that ball. Jones should be terrified that a goalkeeper is coming towards him. You have got to get there and hope it hits you in the face and you keep it out. Chelsea need a new goalkeeper if they want to get back to where they want to be."

Carragher didn't stop there, also touching upon an incident that could've further dampened Sanchez's night – a potential penalty that went unchecked thanks to VAR, leaving Carragher to conclude: "I think Chelsea are fortunate.

"The second angle it looks like it's not a penalty. I don't think the goalkeeper gets enough of the ball. Getting a touch and completely taking someone out is not enough. I think Chelsea are very fortunate."

While Carragher was highly critical of Sanchez's performance, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was far less severe, jumping to his goalkeeper's defense. Post-match, he stated: "I'm very happy with Robert, he's doing fantastic with us. Not only in building from the back but also making saves."

Sanchez will be looking to regain his form throughout the week. Chelsea face Greek team Panathinaikos in the Europa Conference League on Thursday before a clash with Newcastle. Sanchez, 26, joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023. He has since played in 29 matches for Chelsea across all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets.
