The local community has been left reeling after a driver, identified as Nick Payne - a Surrey hospital emergency department consultant - tragically died in a car crash off a bridge onto the M3 in Camberley.
Despite rapid intervention by emergency services, confirmed that the man, in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Heartfelt tributes have poured in for Nick Payne, the admired former head of Frimley Park Hospital's emergency department, who lost his life on Tuesday (October 1) in the devastating accident, which has been confirmed by a hospital spokesperson.
Nick Payne's significant contributions to healthcare did not go unnoticed; he served diligently as an Emergency Department Consultant and had previously held the role of Chief of Service at Frimley Park's emergency department for over half a decade.
A representative for Frimley Park Hospital said: "We have had to make the very sad announcement to our staff today (Wednesday, October 2) that our well-respected colleague, Nick Payne, Emergency Department Consultant, died yesterday (Tuesday, October 1) in a road traffic collision."
At the site of the tragic incident where Payne's vehicle collided with a concrete barrier before plunging over the bridge onto the southbound carriageway, floral memorials speak volumes of his character, commemorating him as a cherished friend and guide, known for his "smile, waistcoats and banter", reports .
Heartfelt social media tributes have been pouring in after the tragic M3 crash that claimed Mr Payne's life. Surrey Police are calling for witnesses, particularly to track a black BMW I3 seen before the collision.
A spokesperson from Surrey Police urged: "If you were in the area between 5.20pm and 5.25pm yesterday (Tuesday) evening and witnessed the collision, or you have CCTV, dash cam or helmet cam footage that might have captured any part of this incident, please get in touch quoting reference PR/45240112326".
