A few areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snow while rain lashed other parts, including the plains, of the valley on Saturday, officials said. Tulail and Gurez in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, as well as Sinthan Top in south Kashmir, saw fresh overnight snow, according to PTI.
Due to moderate snowfall, the Gurez-Bandipora Road has been closed for traffic, the officials reported. Schools up to Class 8 in Tulail and up to Class 5 in Gurez have been suspended because of the continuous snowfall and inclement weather.
Other areas in the higher reaches, such as Zoji La along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Mughal Road, the alternative route connecting the valley with Jammu, also received fresh snow. Traffic on both roads has been halted due to the snowfall.
Widespread rain affected most parts of the valley, including Srinagar. Several areas also experienced thunderstorms and gusty winds during the night, with some areas seeing hail that damaged crops in orchards, officials said.
The Met office has forecasted the possibility of light to moderate rain or snow in most places, with moderate to heavy precipitation in some areas, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds, lasting until Sunday evening.
The weather is expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain and thunderstorms expected at scattered places on Monday.
The Met office has advised farmers to suspend operations until Monday and has warned of the possibility of landslides, mudslides, or shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
