IMD forecasts rainfall over 7 states across India; sharp drop in night temperatures across North India

Send Push
The India Meteorological Department (IMD)has predicted a mixed weather pattern across India this week, marked by continued rainfall activity in southern and northeastern regions and a significant drop in minimum temperatures across northern and central parts of the country. Between November 6 and 9, multiple states are expected to experience light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, while the north braces for crisp and cooler nights.

Persistent showers in the south peninsular regionA prolonged wet spell is likely to continue over the southern peninsula, particularly affecting Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, as per the IMD’s latest bulletin. The region is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms through the week, with isolated heavy downpours predicted between November 6 and 8.

Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh and parts of south interior Karnataka are also forecast to receive rain and thunderstorms during November 6–7. The department has also warned of lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph over Telangana during the same period.

While the rainfall activity is expected to gradually ease by the end of the week, the India Meteorological Department has urged residents, especially in coastal and low-lying regions, to remain alert against sudden showers, localised flooding, and lightning strikes.

Thunderstorms across western and northeastern states in IndiaBeyond the southern region, western India is also likely to witness rainfall activity. Konkan coast, Goa, and parts of central Maharashtra may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.

In the eastern and northeastern states, a spell of unstable weather is expected. After the thunderstorms with lightning of November 5 over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, conditions are expected to stabilise on November 6 in these states. However, residents and travellers in these areas are advised to be careful about sudden downpour, possibility of localised waterlogging, and traffic snares. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to see thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph.

Sharp decline in night temperatures over north and central IndiaA notable fall in night temperatures is also on the cards for large parts of northern and central India. The IMD has forecast a drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures across northwestern India between November 6 and 8, after which temperatures are expected to stabilise. Similarly, central India is likely to see a fall of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during the same period.

This change signals the early onset of winter-like conditions across states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Early morning fog and cool breezes are likely to become more prominent, especially in the Indo-Gangetic plains.

Weather outlook for Nov 6 to 9The IMD’s extended outlook suggests isolated to scattered rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema (Andhra Pradesh), coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during November 6–8. The weather is expected to remain largely stable across other parts of the country, with no major warnings issued.

Day-wise highlights include:
  • November 6: Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may occur at isolated locations across Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu.
  • November 7: Heavy rainfall is again expected at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, with thunderstorms over Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka.
  • November 8: Isolated heavy rainfall likely to persist over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while thunderstorms with lightning may occur at a few places.
  • November 9: Thunderstorms with lightning are expected at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, though no warnings have been issued.
No severe weather warnings issuedDespite the active weather across southern India, the IMD has not issued any major warnings for severe storms, cyclonic activity, or heavy flooding. However, the department continues to advise caution, especially in areas prone to waterlogging or lightning.

Residents, farmers, and fishermen are urged to monitor local forecasts and follow advisories issued by state disaster management authorities. The ongoing rainfall is expected to bring some relief to dry regions of southern India while marking the gradual seasonal transition toward cooler and more stable conditions across the rest of the country.
