Mumbai: The Dongri Police have arrested two individuals in connection with a high-value cheating case involving the sale of fake gold coins. The accused, Abdul Rauf Musa Ghameriya (52) and Pamesh Surendra Khimavat (32), were taken into custody after allegedly duping a jeweller of Rs 2.3 crore by selling him counterfeit gold coins disguised as genuine ones.
According to the Dongari police, the complainant, Narendra Ladhuramji Soni (48), was approached by the accused between April 12 and April 14, 2025. The duo reportedly conspired to cheat him by presenting 25 counterfeit Switzerland based Valcambi Suisse gold coins, each weighing 100 grams, in authentic-looking packaging. Believing the coins to be genuine, Soni paid Rs 2.3 crore in cash.
Upon realising the fraud, the complainant lodged a complaint at Dongri Police Station on April 15. Based on his statement, a case was registered under sections 316(5), 318(4), and 61(2) of BNS.
Acting on a tip-off, Senior Inspector Lad and his crime detection team laid a trap near Sandhurst Road, where the accused were expected to arrive with more fake coins. Once spotted, the complainant identified the suspects, leading to their arrest. During questioning, both confessed to their involvement in the scam.
Police recovered Rs 2 lakh in cash from accused Pamesh Khimavat, believed to be part of the scammed money. Both accused were produced before the court, which granted six days of police custody for further investigation.
Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining cheated amount and that the probe is being conducted under the supervision of senior officers.
