Navi Mumbai News: Women Make Up Majority Of Kidney Donors At Apollo Hospitals

Send Push

At Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai (AHNM), women have emerged as the unsung heroes of kidney transplantation, accounting for 266 out of 408 kidney donors since the program began in 2017. Doctors believe that the innate kindness and selflessness women show towards their families play a major role in their willingness to donate.

Milestones in Organ Transplantation
Since its first live donor kidney transplant on April 11, 2017, and its first deceased donor transplant on June 15, 2017, AHNM has performed:

  • 349 live donor kidney transplants

  • 59 deceased donor transplants

  • 18 international transplants

  • 13 pediatric kidney transplants

The hospital has also completed 229 liver transplants, 11 heart transplants, and 13 cornea transplants, with a five-year patient and kidney survival rate of around 90%.

Celebrating World Organ Donation Day

On World Organ Donation Day, AHNM is honouring the courage of donors, the resilience of recipients, and the life-changing power of organ transplantation. The hospital continues to work towards bridging the gap between demand and availability — a challenge that persists despite India’s progress in the last decade.

Maharashtra Among Leading States

According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), thousands of patients remain on waiting lists each year, especially for liver, kidney, and heart transplants. Maharashtra remains one of the leading states for organ donation, driven by government initiatives, hospital programs, and growing public awareness.

‘One Yes to Eight Lives’ Campaign

AHNM is promoting its “One Yes to Eight Lives” pledge through both online and offline campaigns. Activities include mall-based awareness drives, free organ screening camps, and digital outreach aimed at over five lakh Navi Mumbaikars to break myths and encourage conversations about organ donation.

Honouring Donors and Their Families

On August 8, AHNM hosted a patient support meet and donor felicitation ceremony, bringing together donors, recipients, families, and care teams. The event was filled with gratitude, shared tears, and renewed hope — a testament to the life-changing impact of transplantation.

Doctors Speak on the Human Connection

Dr. Amey Sonavane, Senior Consultant Hepatology and Liver Transplant, said, “Every transplant is more than a medical milestone it’s a story of human connection. That ‘yes’ from a donor becomes a lifeline for someone facing end-stage organ failure.”

Dr. Amit Langote, Senior Consultant Nephrology, added, “One organ donor can save up to eight lives. Kidney transplants restore not just health, but hope, independence, and dignity.”
