"Have you recently given birth to a child, and your periods have not returned yet? If you are also confused about how long after delivery your periods should come and why there is a delay, then this article is for you. Here you will get all the important answers.

No periods after delivery: After the birth of a child, many types of hormonal changes occur in the body of a woman. Due to these changes, it takes time for periods to come after delivery. Some women get periods within 6 to 8 weeks of delivery, while some do not get periods for 6 months or even more. It completely depends on whether the woman can breastfeed or not.
The hormones like estrogen and progesterone which increase in the body during pregnancy gradually start decreasing, and then after some time, the normal cycle begins. The recovery process of the body is also a reason for the delay in periods. This is a natural process that gradually gets cured on its own. All you need is to understand the signals of your body, and if there is any kind of problem, then consult a doctor.
What is the connection between breastfeeding and periods?
Dr Saloni Chaddha of the Gynecology Department at Safdarjung Hospital explains that if the mother is not breastfeeding the child, then periods usually return within 1 to 2 months after delivery. But if the woman is exclusively breastfeeding, that is, she is only feeding the mother's milk, then more prolactin hormone is produced in the body. This hormone helps in producing milk, but due to this, ovulation stops. When there is no ovulation, then periods will also not come. This is the reason why periods may take a long time in breastfeeding women.
When should one be alert?
Many women get worried about whether there is something wrong with their body. But if there are no other symptoms like persistent abdominal pain, sudden heavy bleeding or extreme fatigue, then there is no need to panic. This delay in periods is a normal process. However, if periods do not come even after a year of delivery and the woman is not breastfeeding, then a doctor should definitely be consulted.
Take care of contraception
It is also worth noting that pregnancy can happen again even without periods. Because ovulation happens first and then periods come. If the woman does not adopt contraceptive measures thinking that if periods are not coming then pregnancy will not happen. This can be a misunderstanding. Therefore, it is necessary to think about family planning some time after delivery.
Keep these things in mind-
- Delay in periods is normal
- Track periods
- If it has been more than a year, consult a doctor
- The absence of periods does not mean that pregnancy cannot occur
- Avoid stress and give time to your body
- Health checkup is necessary even while breastfeeding
- Take care of proper diet and nutrition
