Clearwater ferry crash: 'Multiple injuries' reported as emergency services rush to scene

Multiple people have reportedly been injured after ferry and boat were involved in a catastrophic collision.

Eyewitnesses report a chaotic scene near the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Clearwater, Florida after a boat crashed into a ferry oon Sunday April 27.

Multiple helicopters have been seen airlifting victims to nearby . Emergency responders are on-site, and authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

This incident marks a significant maritime accident in the area, raising concerns about waterway safety and emergency response preparedness. Local officials have urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate efficiently.

"A regular boat just hit the ferry in Clearwater. I think over 4 helicopters airlifting people out so far, I don’t even know how many ambulances are there. Every minute there’s more and more," a supposed witness wrote on X citing a broadcast from the local coast guard.

"This is awful," they added.

Earlier reports said the ferry was carrying 42 passengers at the time of the collision. In addition to dozens of injuries, at least three persons are in critical condition.

Videos of the response circulating on X shows a long convoy of both police and EMS officials rushing to the scene as red and blue lights fill the sky.

According to maritime officials speaking over a police scanner, there were "multiple red tag victims" among the injured.

The term denotes a victim that has endured severe injuries but who also has a high chance for survival, according to the National Institute of Health.

The City of Clearwater said police and fire services were at the scene, according to an ABC News affiliate. The cause of the crash and the exact number of injured persons has not been confirmed by authorities.
