A fresh storm has hit Indian cricket with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif claiming that Jasprit Bumrah may soon retire from Test cricket. This comes after Bumrah’s lackluster performance in the Manchester Test, where he managed to take only one wicket in England’s first innings, a far cry from his 7-wicket haul at Lord’s.
Kaif’s Worrying ObservationKaif voiced his concern after watching Bumrah bowl with reduced pace and rhythm in Manchester. Speaking to media, he said:
“I think Bumrah may not feature in upcoming Tests and could even announce retirement. He’s struggling with his fitness. He’s someone who’ll step back himself if he can’t give 100%.”
Kaif emphasized that Bumrah’s spirit remains strong, but his body might not be cooperating anymore.
Bumrah’s Form Sparks DoubtsWhile Bumrah has 13 wickets in the series so far, his performance in the fourth Test has drawn criticism. Observers noted a clear drop in pace and intensity, with Kaif pointing out how even a catch taken by the wicketkeeper on Bumrah’s delivery hinted that he’s not bowling at full throttle.
“Test Cricket Without Bumrah?”“Bumrah can take wickets anytime—if he’s fit. But his body seems to have given up. His 'elder brother', meaning his body, isn’t supporting him.”
Kaif warned that fans may soon have to adjust to watching Tests without Bumrah, just as they’ve had to with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R. Ashwin missing games. He added:
The Bigger Picture“I hope I’m wrong. But Bumrah doesn’t seem to be enjoying Test cricket anymore. His body looks worn down.”
Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead in recent years, has a history of injuries. If Kaif’s instinct proves right, it could signal a major shift in India's red-ball setup.
