Team India's performance in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 was very poor. It was considered a strong contender to win this tournament. But the Indian team could not even reach the knock stage and was eliminated from the group stage itself. Now questions are being raised on the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur. At the same time, according to the latest reports, BCCI may soon remove Harmanpreet from the captaincy after meeting with head coach Amol Majumdar. Apart from this, former Team India captain Mithali Raj has also criticized and said that no growth has been seen in the team in the last 2 to 3 years. She has also demanded a new captain.
The fate will be decided before the New Zealand series. The Indian women's team has to play an ODI series against New Zealand from October 24. According to the Indian Express report, before this, the BCCI can hold a meeting with Team India's head coach Amol Majumdar. During this, Harmanpreet's future will be decided. Before the 2025 ODI World Cup, the BCCI now wants to remove her and bring in a new captain.
Let us tell you that the Indian women's team could not make it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2016. After this, Harmanpreet Kaur was given the captaincy of the T20 team. Under her captaincy, Team India kept reaching the knockout stage. In the 2020 edition, it reached the finals. However, it could never manage to win the tournament.
Some reasons have come to light for removing Harmanpreet Kaur from captaincy. The biggest reason is that this time the Indian team could not reach the semi-finals, even though the squad was very strong. The team was also considered a strong contender to win the T20 World Cup. But after losing first to New Zealand and then to Australia, the dream of semi-finals was shattered. Team India's fitness and fielding have also been a big problem under Harmanpreet Kaur's captaincy. 3 catches were dropped against Australia in the T20 World Cup. There were some opportunities that could have been converted into catches.
Former captain of the team Mithali Raj has also raised questions about the fitness of the team. She has said that big tournaments cannot be won on the basis of only 2 fit players out of 11. According to her, other players apart from Jemima Rodrigues and Radha Yadav are not fast on the field. Questions are also being raised about not giving a chance to new players while Harmanpreet is there. According to Mithali, there has been no growth in the team for the last few years. Only old players have been playing continuously.
Mithali gave the example of the men's team and said that they are more successful because they give opportunities to new players after every big tournament. Whereas new players have not been prepared under Harmanpreet's captaincy. At the same time, the planning of the team management before big tournaments has also not been good. The Asia Cup preparation for the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE was a big opportunity. But the Indian team kept playing only with the intention of winning that tournament. When the tournament started in the UAE, there was confusion about batting at number 3 and number 4 positions.
