Canada-Indian Diaspora: The Diwali celebration scheduled for October 30 at Parliament Hill has been cancelled by the office of Canada's opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, amid ongoing diplomatic tensions with India. The event was organized by the Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC) and was set to be hosted by Conservative MP Todd Doherty.
No explanation was provided to the organizers regarding the abrupt cancellation, which has disappointed the community that has celebrated this event for 23 years. Shiv Bhasker, President of OFIC, expressed feelings of betrayal and singled out by the cancellation, especially during such a sensitive diplomatic period. He noted that the event had traditionally brought together diverse communities, including Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs.
Bhasker voiced concerns about the absence of Canadian leaders at the event, suggesting it sends a negative message to the Indo-Canadian community. “We are being viewed not as fellow Canadians, but as outsiders," he said. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the Canadian Indian community and the actions of the Indian government, underscoring that such cancellations could further alienate Indo-Canadians.
Bhasker also highlighted issues of systemic bias and discrimination within Canada, stating that the cancellation reflects deeper societal problems. “This is not just about a canceled event; it is about a much deeper issue. Racism and discrimination are thriving in Canada," he remarked, asserting that Indo-Canadians are proud citizens whose identities are deeply embedded in Canadian society, irrespective of political disputes.
The OFIC is calling for an apology from the office of the Leader of the Opposition, describing the cancellation as an “insensitive and discriminatory act.” Bhasker stressed the need for accountability, advocating for a Canada where no community feels marginalized due to their cultural or ethnic background.
