President Droupadi Murmu expressed gratitude for the Indian community in Malawi, emphasizing their role as a vital link between the two countries. During her visit to Malawi, the final stop on her African tour, she was warmly received by the Indian diaspora at an event in Lilongwe.

In her address, President Murmu acknowledged the Indian community's contributions to Malawi's society and economy. She encouraged them to continue participating in India's development journey.

Highlighting the long-standing diplomatic ties between India and Malawi, she said, “India and Malawi have completed 60 years of diplomatic relations. These relations are historical, and we share deep cultural ties. India values its partnership with Africa, which is based on mutual trust, equality, and benefit. Our cooperation with Africa focuses on utilizing local resources and building capacities according to the continent’s priorities."

She also emphasized that the Indian government's top priority is the welfare of its citizens abroad. "The welfare of our countrymen living outside India is the highest priority of our government. We are committed to working with partners worldwide to address concerns and ensure the safety, well-being, and progress of Indian nationals," President Murmu said.

President Murmu arrived in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe, on October 17, marking the conclusion of her state visits to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi. She was greeted by Malawi’s Vice President, Michael Usi, and other officials, with a ceremonial welcome and a traditional cultural performance at the airport.

Earlier, she addressed the India-Malawi Business Meet, noting that India is Malawi’s fourth-largest trading partner, with over USD 500 million in investments across various sectors. She also highlighted the potential for further cooperation in areas like agriculture, mining, energy, and tourism.

This visit marks the first-ever state visit from India to Malawi. President Murmu was accompanied by the Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, and Members of Parliament, Mukeshkumar Dalal and Atul Garg.
