Russia Calls for India's Permanent Membership in the UN Security Council

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has urged for India, Brazil, and African nations to be granted permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Lavrov emphasized the need for these countries to be represented to better reflect the global majority.

"Countries such as India, Brazil, and representatives from Africa should have long been permanent members of the Security Council. This is essential for ensuring the representativeness of the global majority," Lavrov said during an interview.

During the recent high-level session of the UN General Assembly, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also voiced strong support for India’s inclusion in a reformed Security Council. He highlighted the need for a more representative and responsive system that prioritizes fairness and inclusivity. Starmer called for the permanent inclusion of countries like India, Brazil, Japan, and Germany, along with permanent African representation and additional seats for elected members.

"If we want the system to work for the poorest and most vulnerable, their voices must be heard. The Security Council must become a more representative body, capable of taking action rather than being held back by politics," Starmer said in his address.

Other nations, including Chile, France, Micronesia, and Portugal, have also supported India’s bid for a permanent seat. The US and Russia, both current permanent members, continue to back India's aspirations for a permanent role in the UNSC.
