Sambalpur: A day after assistant professor of Gangadhar Meher University Gopikant Suna was arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting a female student, the Vice-Chancellor of the state-run institute issued an advisory and convened a meeting of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
Sources said the move aims at reviewing institutional safeguards besides addressing the allegations against the arrested assistant professor.
Suna, who worked in the Education Department of GMU since December 2023, is now in judicial custody following his arrest by Mahila Police in Sambalpur on Thursday. He was subsequently suspended from the position by the university following his arrest.
Police sources said Suna was arrested after a 20-year-old female student of the second-year integrated BEd lodged an FIR on July 16. She accused the assistant professor of establishing a sexual relationship with her under the false promise of marriage and later refusing to marry her.
The student also alleged that Suna had emotionally manipulated her and had exploited other students in a similar way.
Meanwhile, a video showing Suna dancing to DJ music on a road has gone viral on social media. While the video does not appear to have links with the case, its circulation after his arrest has drawn considerable attention.
