Cam Norrie won the Battle of Britain with a bang against Jacob Fearnley amid French fireworks and chaos. But the British No.3 was made to sweat by the British No.2 on a muggy Paris night. Their third round tie was staged in the early evening in the Court Simonne-Mathieu - the stadium closest to the nearby Parc des Princes.
Over 48,000 fans watched the Champions League final on four big screens at Paris Saint-Germain's home ground. And their fans let off fireworks in the streets outside Roland Garros in the build-up to the final. PSG fans also supporters congregated on the bridge above la peripherique - Paris' inner ring road - and cars hooted their horns as they passed during the Horned Frog derby between the two former Texas Christian University students.
There was a constant din throughout the match before Norrie won 6-3 7-6 6-2 in two hours and 44 minutes. British No.3 Norrie, who beat Daniil Medvedev on the same court in the first round, said: "I feel great. But it was really tough to get there. It was a tough match. I think the toughest part was managing the fireworks. That was difficult for both of us. Jacob and I went to the same university, TCU, and he has had an amazing season.
"Had some great results. I didn't know what to expectb from him. I am happy I played a solid match. It was a great atmosphere.
"I went through about seven shirts in three sets. I was sweating a lot and had to work really hard for that. So, it feels good to get through."
Norrie twice served for the 84-minute second set but dropped only one point in the tiebreak. But Fearnley made 79 unforced errors and had his serve broken seven times.
"Jacob played really good when he was down," Norrie added. "In the second set, he was playing better than me and it was a credit to him.
"I didn't panic at all when he broke me both times. I just played the next game. He dropped his level a bit in the tie-break."
