has been denounced as "shocking" after a man was allegedly charged £450 for two beers. He was then supposedly pepper-sprayed by security staff, and is now scared of returning to the coastal city loved by Brits. An anonymous contributor took to the Facebook group BENIDORM BENIDORM (so good they named it twice!) to vent their frustration. They wrote: "My lad is in Benidorm first time, and in a bar last night. Got two paid card and the bar took £450, granted should have noticed when paying but we all make mistakes after a few drinks.

"When he complained as he noticed straight after they wouldn't give him it back, only for two bouncers to take him outside and pepper spray him. Did anyone see anything? Such a shame as was having such a great time and now scared to ever go back. Shocking Benidorm."

Experts warn tourists not to be too obvious when using their money in Benidorm.

Holiday Extras advice reads: "It goes without saying, but it's always a good idea to keep your wits about you when on holiday. Benidorm can get very crowded on the streets and beach, particularly during the summer months.

"As with any busy destination, keep an eye out for pick pockets, don't carry any valuables you don't need and be discreet with money.

"Be very wary of street performers, particularly 'potato men' who perform magic tricks with hollowed out potatoes and a ball. Sometimes this is a scam by groups who prey on the fact that the audience is distracted."

Some bars in the city advertise €1 beers.

In one popular video, Frank the Stag Man warned visitors that they "get what you pay for", describing the drinks as "absolute rubbish".

But reporter was left pleasantly surprised when he tried one.

Adam wrote for the : "Arriving at my table within minutes, the dinky little glass of beer was pretty much as expected: certainly not a pint, and perhaps not even a half (maybe more of a third). But it was a freshly-poured serving of Amstel, so it certainly wasn't the worst choice of beer.

"Sipping it, it was ice cold and it tasted normal - I didn't get the impression it was watered down. Most impressively, it was an absolute bargain of a drink for what was the equivalent of essentially just 84p - a price that nowhere in Manchester would ever consider charging."
