The M25 was closed for 12 hours after a crash between a lorry and a tanker. Drivers were warned to expect major delays between Junction 5 and 7.
National Highways said the tanker, which was transporting waste, "overturned and ruptured" following the crash. It caused oil, diesel and waste to spill on the carriageway.
The crash was first reported at 4.14am on Wednesday morning and disruption is expected to continue throughout the day. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
