But the country is known as the cleanest in the world, and has implemented strict policies to keep its free from pollution. Since banning plastic bags in 2008, the country has been a model of sustainability and environmental protection. This measure has been so effective that tourists visiting Rwanda must undergo luggage inspections to ensure they are not carrying plastic bags.

The country has a successful plastic ban meaning that any plastic bags in your luggage will be confiscated at the airport or other point of entry. Visitors are asked to keep the country clean and to dispose of litter responsibly.
The ban on plastic bags in is part of a broader effort to combat pollution and promote sustainability. On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandans participate in a mandatory community service called Umuganda. During this day, residents engage in cleaning streets and public areas, as well as building community infrastructure.
According to United Nations, Rwanda became the first country to ban plastic bags. United Nations say: "The law covered the production, importation, sale, and use of these plastics. The ban was expanded in 2019 through a law forbidding the use and sale of single-use plastic like bottles, straws, plates, and forks."
Rwanda is landlocked, with an area of just 26,338 square kilometres and is home to 12.2 million inhabitants, making it one of the most densely populated nations on the African continent.
