If all had gone well, Amitabh Bachchan would have played the lead in his first international project, Komagata Maru in 2006. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Deepa spilled some beans on the same. Read on to know more!
DYK THIS about Deepa Mehta's Komagata Maru? Recalling that experience, Deepa Mehta tells Zoom, “The lead in my film Kamagata Maru could have been played by no other actor except Mr Bachchan. The hero of my most ambitious and expensive film had to be a man of substance, stature, and wisdom. I couldn't think of anyone else but Mr Bachchan.” Deepa had also finalised the rest of her cast. Seema Biswas, who received the maximum raves in the international press for Deepa Mehta’s Water, and John Abraham were to play key roles in Komagata Maru. Deepa had also penciled in Terence Stamp, the charismatic British actor from Billy Budd and Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Deserts, to play the crucial role of a lawyer. Recalls Deepa, “I could see Mr Bachchan and Terence together on screen. They would have been dynamite together. But what was not to happen, was not to happen. It is one of my abiding regrets that I haven’t worked with him. I am still hopeful. The script of Komagata Maru lies untouched. If I ever make it, it would be only with Mr Bachchan.” For the unversed, Komagata Maru is the name of the Japanese ship that sailed in 1914 to Vancouver with 376 passengers from Punjab and was not allowed to enter Canada. You may also like
