Guwahati: A special Pocso court in Arunachal Pradesh Thursday sentenced a former hostel warden of a govt residential school to death for sexually assaulting 21 children — eight boys and 13 girls — for four years between 2019 and 2022.

The girls were aged between six and 15 years, and the boys were between seven and 16 years during the time of the commission of the crime. Four of the victims had even attempted suicide. Along with the death sentence handed to prime accused Yumken Bagra, the former hostel warden of Karo Govt Residential School at Monigong in Shi-Yomi district, the special judge (Pocso) at Yupia also sentenced the school’s Hindi teacher, Marbom Ngomdir Tapir, and its former headmaster, Singtung Yorpen, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. Two other accused, Daniel Pertin and Tajung Yorpen, were acquitted.

Prime accused Bagra was convicted under charges of aggravated penetrative sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault and sexual harassment under the Pocso Act. Both Ngomdir and Yorpen were convicted under charges of failure to report or record a case under the Pocso Act. Pro bono advocate Nikita Danggen for the victims, who was appointed as their legal counsel by Gauhati HC told TOI, “This must be the only case in the country where a death sentence has been awarded under the Pocso Act and none of the victims have died. I have done my research extensively and I have not come across such cases. In all other cases there is rape and murder.”
