Kanpur: The city police detained a Myanmar national found driving an auto-rickshaw in Kotwali area.
The police questioned him and his family members who live in Shuklaganj. The foreign national was stopped by Kotwali police at the city's main junction and detained after he failed to present any valid identification documents.
DCP East Satyajit Gupta said that on Tuesday night, the Kotwali police were conducting checkings near Bada Chauraha when they stopped and questioned an auto driver. The driver, Mohammad Sahil, showed a driving licence and Aadhaar card with an address in Shuklaganj's Shaktinagar Ganga Katri. During questioning, he admitted being from Myanmar and said that he was residing with his extended family of 10 people, including his spouse, children, sister, brother-in-law, and currently unwell father, for approximately eight years.
A team led by Kotwali station officer Jagdish Pandey visited his residence and seized various documents and two mobile phones. Station officer Pandey confirmed that the accused lacks citizenship status.
He was questioned as to how he obtained an Aadhaar card and driving licence allegedly acquired through fraudulent means. The family's eight-year residence in Shuklaganj has been communicated to Unnao's Gangaghat police station. Mohammad Sahil is currently in custody at Kotwali police station, where charges against him are being filed.
His wife Ajida said they relocated to Shuklaganj Unnao eight years ago seeking treatment for her father-in-law after he suffered a stroke. They reside in temporary accommodation by Ganga Katri in Shaktinagar. She stated that her husband has four brothers and they live together with a sister, brother-in-law, and four young children. The brothers work as e-rickshaw operators in Kanpur.
