Kanpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the upgraded Govindpuri Railway Station in Kanpur on Thursday. This station is among the 103 stations renovated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Addressing the event, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana said that this undertaking was particularly meaningful to him as an aspirational project which was realised through Prime Minister's committed and continuous efforts
The station, which received Pink railway status on March 8, 2018, stands as North Central Railway's pioneer facility with complete women management across ticketing, operations, and security functions. The modernisation project, completed at an expenditure exceeding Rs 25 crore, focuses on delivering enhanced passenger facilities through improved comfort and connectivity.
Deputy chief traffic manager Ashutosh Singh said, the PM initiated the station's development on Feb 26, 2024. During the ceremony, students from local schools displayed the valour of Indian forces during Operation Sindoor through posters and banners.
The ‘Operation Sindoor' theme at Govindpuri station holds special relevance, honouring Shubham Dwivedi, a Kanpur resident who was killed in the Pahalgam terrorist incident. The venue served both as a memorial and a centre for patriotic expression. The event witnessed the presence of mayor Pramila Pandey, MPs Ramesh Awasthi and Devendra Singh Bhole, and MLAs Surendra Maithani and Mahesh Trivedi along with other public officials.
Currently, Govindpuri station handles 60 trains, including 12 services that bypass Kanpur Central en route to Prayagraj. Plans indicate an increase to 100 trains within a year, establishing Govindpuri as a crucial transport junction for southern Kanpur, while reducing pressure on Kanpur Central station and improving connectivity on major routes. The modernisation includes improved platform surfaces, better lighting systems, clean drinking water facilities, enhanced passenger waiting areas, new digital display boards providing real-time train information and upgraded toilet facilities.
The expanded train services will significantly benefit local commuters and long-distance travellers, offering convenient alternatives to Kanpur Central station. The upgraded facility features improved parking areas, better approach roads, and enhanced security systems including CCTV surveillance. The modernised booking office provides efficient service, while new lifts and escalators ensure comfortable passenger movement between platforms.
Eco-friendly measures including energy-efficient lighting and water conservation systems have also been implemented. The upgraded station serves as a model for similar developments under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
