Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has drawn comparisons between his own playing days and the rise of young left-hander Abhishek Sharma , praising the support system that allows the youngster to bat with freedom and aggression.
Speaking to PTI, the 2011 World Cup winner said Abhishek’s fearless approach is a result of strong backing from India’s current leadership group, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav . Yuvraj explained that this environment reminds him of the one that helped shape his own career under coach Gary Kirsten .
“I think the fearlessness also comes with support from the coach and the captain,” Yuvraj said. “When the coach and captain allow you to go and play your game freely, you can express yourself better. That’s what I experienced when Gary Kirsten was coach — he always told me that if I played my natural game, I’d put India in a winning position.”
Yuvraj added that the same mindset is now being instilled in Abhishek. “The confidence that Gautam and Suryakumar have given him — that if he plays his game, India will win six out of ten times — is exactly what’s helping him succeed,” he explained.
The veteran believes this culture of trust has transformed India’s white-ball cricket , giving players the freedom to fail while chasing high-impact performances. He also noted that such an approach defined India’s golden era under Kirsten, and Gambhir and Suryakumar are now fostering that same fearless energy in a new generation led by Abhishek Sharma.
