Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that it will wind down its PlayStation Stars loyalty programme , which has been active for the past three years. The programme, designed to reward PlayStation players, will no longer accept new members starting, and current members will have until July 23, 2025, to continue earning rewards and leveling up within the program. What is PlayStation Stars
Launched in 2022, PlayStation Stars allowed players to earn rewards, including Digital Collectibles , by engaging with various gaming activities. It allowed gamers to earn rewards by engaging with their PlayStation console and games.
How PlayStation Stars worked
Players earn points by completing various "Campaigns" or challenges that may range from simply playing a game, to earning specific trophies, or being among the first to platinum a new release. PlayStation Plus members also earn points for eligible purchases made on the PlayStation Store.
A unique aspect of the programme is the ability to earn "Digital Collectibles." These are digital representations of iconic PlayStation characters, consoles, and memorabilia, which players can display in a virtual "Display Case" on the PlayStation App. Sony clarified these were not NFTs and could not be traded or sold.
Rewards: Earned points could be redeemed for various rewards, including: PSN Wallet Funds, allowing players to get discounts or even free games by using their points to add funds to their PlayStation Network wallet.
Select Game Titles: Sometimes, specific full games or DLC were available for redemption.
Exclusive Digital Collectibles: Beyond the campaign-earned collectibles, some were only available through point redemption.
Status Levels: Players could level up their PlayStation Stars status (from Level 1 to Level 4) by earning rare trophies and making full game purchases on the PlayStation Store. Higher levels offered additional benefits, such as priority routing for chat support.
What is changing and Sony's take on the programme
Sony said it is ending the programme.
“We’ve learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to,” said Sony Interactive , “and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. As a result, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars.”
While its current iteration is coming to an end, members can continue to earn Digital Collectibles, Points, and level up their status until July 23, 2025. However, after that date, there will be no new campaigns or rewards available within PlayStation Stars. The programme will officially conclude on November 2, 2026. After this, members can still redeem any remaining Points, as long as they don’t expire before the program ends.
Sony has assured players that they will still be able to access their Digital Collectibles even after these changes take effect.
“We want to thank all of our players for supporting PlayStation Stars since its launch,” Sony stated. “As we explore new ways to evolve our loyalty program for the future, we’ll continue to celebrate all of our players through various community activities.”
