Akhilesh Yadav pushes for 12 seats as MVA scrambles to finalize deal before Maharashtra polls

In a key development ahead of Maharashtra's upcoming Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has put forth a demand for 12 seats within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav , addressing reporters in Dhule on Saturday, emphasized the party’s intent to secure a seat-sharing arrangement . “We’re content with a few seats,” Yadav said, highlighting the SP's goal of maintaining a focused presence in the state.

This new demand adds further complexity to the MVA’s ongoing internal discussions, which are yet to reach a conclusion. While Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar) have joined forces at the national level under the INDIA bloc, finalizing their seat-sharing arrangement in Maharashtra has been an arduous process.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, when questioned about the progress of the talks, refrained from addressing internal tensions directly but commented on the situation. “If Sanjay Raut is controlling Uddhav Thackeray, that’s their issue,” he said, referring to ongoing negotiations within the alliance.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut assured reporters that the seat-sharing discussions were progressing, citing meetings with both Uddhav Thackeray and Akhilesh Yadav. "By tonight, the discussions will be completed, and our seat-sharing will be finalized," Raut confirmed, noting that agreements with the NCP had already been reached.

Raut also appeared to criticize Congress for prolonging the negotiations, a sentiment echoed by Uddhav Thackeray, who cautioned that delays in finalizing the arrangement could potentially harm the alliance. However, Ramesh Chennithala, Congress’ in-charge for Maharashtra, played down suggestions of discord, stating that all parties were committed to finalizing the seat-sharing by day’s end. "MVA has no differences, and we are moving forward as a united front," he said.

With elections just a month away, the MVA is under pressure to resolve its internal disagreements and present a unified front. The November 20 elections will be a crucial test for the alliance, particularly in the wake of splits within the Shiv Sena and NCP, as the MVA looks to solidify its standing in Maharashtra's political landscape.
