NEW DELHI: The much anticipated Haryana Assembly elections reached their conclusion on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) emerged victorious, securing 48 seats and surpassing the majority threshold. The outcome caught many off guard, as it stood in stark contrast to the projections made by exit polls.
Prior to the announcement of the results, exit polls had forecasted a clean sweep for the Congress party, suggesting they would secure 55 seats. The BJP, according to these predictions, was expected to lag behind with just 27 seats. However, when the final tallies were revealed, the exit polls were proven to be entirely inaccurate, with the actual results painting a completely different picture.
The electoral battles across various constituencies ranged from narrow victories to landslide wins. In some cases, candidates managed to secure their seats by the slimmest of margins, barely edging out their opponents. On the other hand, certain contenders achieved overwhelming success, amassing substantial wins over their rivals in terms of vote count.
The Uchana Kalan constituency, BJP candidate Devender Chatar Bhuj Attri secured victory over Congress's Brijendra Singh by a razor-thin margin of just 32 votes. This was the smallest margin among the 90 assembly segments that went to polls on October 5.
However, the incumbent MLA from Uchana Kalan, Dushyant Chautala of the Jannayak Janta Party, finished in fifth place, according to the Election Commission.
In contrast, Congress candidate Mamman Khan secured a resounding victory in the Ferozepur Jhirka constituency in Nuh district, defeating BJP's Naseem Ahmed with the highest vote margin in the state of 98,441 votes. Khan, the sitting MLA, garnered 1,30,497 votes, while his closest competitor managed only 32,056 votes.
The Dabwali seat saw a close contest, with Indian National Lok Dal's Aditya Devilal edging out Congress's Amit Sihag by a slim margin of 610 votes. Similarly, in the Loharu constituency, Congress's Rajbir Fartia prevailed over BJP veteran Jai Parkash Dalal by 792 votes. The Adampur seat also witnessed a tight race, with Congress candidate Chander Parkash defeating BJP's Bhavya Bishnoi by 1,268 votes.
