NEW DELHI: The INDIA bloc on Tuesday announced B Sudershan Reddy as their candidate for the Vice Presidential polls . The announcement was made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge .
Reddy, was born on July 8, 1946. He was enrolled as an advocate at Hyderabad with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh on 27 December 1971. He practised in writ and civil matters in the high court of Andhra Pradesh. From 1988 to 1990, he served as Government Pleader in the Andhra Pradesh high court.
Several opposition leaders had convened at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Monday evening to discuss potential names for a joint Vice-Presidential candidate.
Earlier, the ruling NDA has fielded its nominee, CP Radhakrishnan, from Tamil Nadu.
The Vice President is elected by MPs from both houses of Parliament through a secret ballot and proportional representation, as per Article 66(1) of the Constitution.
The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the sudden resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nominations is August 21.
