US President Donald Trump called Charlie Kirk the “greatest evangelist for American liberty,” saying the slain activist has become “immortal.”
Speaking at Kirk’s memorial service on an emotionally charged Sunday evening, Trump said:
"On that terrible day (September 10) our greatest evangelist for American liberty became immortal. He's a martyr now for American freedom. I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie Kirk, and neither now will history."
Trump addressed the massive gathering immediately following remarks from Kirk’s widow, Erika.
In a message to a grieving Erika, the US president vowed to ensure that her two children grow up in a country where their father is “honoured and revered as a great American hero.”
Trump also highlighted what Kirk considered the “biggest decision” of his life: “What was even more important to Charlie than politics and service was the choice he made in the fifth grade — which he called the ‘most important decision of his life’ — to become a Christian and a follower of his saviour, Jesus Christ.”
He added that the assassination was “not just an attack on one man — but an attack on our entire nation.”
Charlie Kirk, Trump said, has become “bigger today than he was just two weeks ago.”
He also pledged to defend, at all costs, the tradition of reason and open debate.
"The tradition of reason and open debate that Charlie practiced is not just a pillar of our democracy, in many ways it's the basis of our entire society... We will defend it at all costs—and we will carry forward the torch of liberty that Charlie Kirk held so proud and so high," Trump stated.
Erika Kirk 'forgives' shooter
Speaking at the memorial, Charlie's wife Erika Kirk said, “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and it is what Charlie would do.”
“The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the Gospel is love,” she added.
The memorial service for the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was held at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. While the facility seats 63,000, attendance far exceeded capacity.
Speakers at the service also included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Donald Trump Jr., Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, incoming US ambassador to India Sergio Gor, and others.
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged in connection with Kirk’s murder.
