'Time for a rest': Radio legend John Laws, the 'golden tonsils,' announces retirement after 71 years

John Laws , also known as, the Golden Tonsils , will be retiring later this year in November.

The Australian radio entertainer revealed his decision on 2SM radio , responding to a listener’s letter who thanked him for years of entertainment. Laws said, "You're not going to be hearing it for long, mate, I think it's time for a rest, is what I think," according to 9NEWS.

His retirement is an emotional moment for many fans and is one of the most searched topics according to Google trends.

The 89-year old said that he will hang up his headphones and retire on November 8 after completing nearly 71 years in radio.

"I've done it for a very, very, very, very long time - 70 years, is it long enough? It's long enough."

Law said that he might "call it a day pretty soon" as it was probably the right time after working in the industry for seven decades, "I would have done it for 71 years, the first week of November will be 71 years since I started on radio," he added.

The broadcaster said that he does not want to be greedy about it and had fantastic 71 years, “Loved almost every minute of it."

Talking about his retirement plans, Laws assured that his health is alright and he wants to "read more and travel".

" I still feel young, I still feel healthy. When I call it a day it will be a day, I'm not going to go away and come back again and say it was all a mistake," he continued. This was Law’s second retirement announcement of his career.

Laws began his career in AM radio in 1953 at 3BO in Bendigo . In 2007, he took a break from radio for four years in 2007 and made his return to the air on 2SM in 2011.
