Representatives for former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris' transition teams met for the first time at the White House. This meeting signals the start of official preparations for a potential handover of power, regardless of who wins the election in November.

The Biden administration confirmed Wednesday that White House Chief of Staff Jeffrey Zients led the session, which was a part of the House Transition Coordinating Committee, responsible for high-level transition planning.

The meeting was significant as it included representatives from both Trump and Harris' teams for the first time this year.

The Presidential Transition Act mandates that representatives of both major candidates be included in these discussions in an advisory role, highlighting the importance of readiness for a potential change in administration.

During the hour-long meeting, participants received updates on various aspects of transition planning, such as allocating office space for the nominees, identifying career officials to fill key roles during the transition temporarily, and preparing detailed operational memos on agency functions for the incoming president’s team.

As November approaches, this meeting reflects the administration's commitment to ensuring a smooth transfer of power, a process mandated and facilitated by law.
