Severe Weather Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rain and Storm Warnings for 17 States in Next 12 Hours

New Delhi, May 5, 2025 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert across 17 states as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected to hit several regions over the next 12 hours. From North to South India, widespread cloud movement and atmospheric instability have already brought significant changes in temperatures and weather conditions across the country.

North India Sees Rising Instability Amid Dust Storms and Rainfall

Regions such as Delhi, Dehradun, and Rajasthan witnessed rapid shifts in weather on Sunday. Dust storms swept through parts of Rajasthan, significantly improving air quality and bringing a temporary respite from the heat. In response, IMD issued a three-hour alert in several districts warning of impending thunderstorms.

In Uttar Pradesh, the IMD has forecast heavy rain and lightning activity in key districts, including Mathura, Agra, Jhansi, Firozabad, and Etawah, along with Jalaun, Mahoba, Hamirpur, and Lalitpur. Strong winds up to 50 km/h are expected to accompany the downpour.

Widespread Rainfall Expected in Central and Eastern States

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh (both east and west), Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, according to the IMD. These states are expected to witness winds between 40-50 km/h, raising concerns about localized damage, particularly in low-lying and agricultural regions.

Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim are also on alert for moderate to heavy rain with the potential for lightning and flash floods between May 4 and May 6.

Rainfall Forecast for Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, several districts have been placed on alert due to the forecast of heavy rains and thunderstorms. These include:

• Jaipur, Alwar, Dausa, Churu, Didwana-Kuchaman

• Nagaur, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Sawai Madhopur, and Kotputli-Behror

Storms accompanied by dust winds and lightning are anticipated, and residents are advised to avoid open spaces and seek shelter during high wind events.

South and Northeast States Experience Weather Shift

Southern states experienced evening drizzles and thunderstorms on Sunday, bringing a drop in temperature and relief from persistent summer heat. In the northeastern states, too, the weather has taken a dramatic turn with widespread showers and heavy winds.

Precautionary Measures Advised

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors during severe weather events, secure loose objects, and avoid travel unless necessary. Farmers have also been advised to take protective measures to shield crops from hailstorms and waterlogging.
