Locked Out Of Your Android Smartphone? Here’s How To Regain Access

Send Push
Setting a screen lock on your Android device is essential for security, but forgetting your PIN, pattern, or password can be a hassle. Fortunately, there are several ways to regain access without data loss. Here’s a guide to effective methods for unlocking your Android smartphone.

Method 1: Unlock Using “Forgot Pattern” (Android 4.4 and Below)

If your device runs on Android 4.4 or earlier, you can use the “Forgot Pattern” feature after multiple failed attempts.

Steps:

  • After five failed attempts, tap “Forgot pattern” at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enter your primary Google Account details (username and password) and click “Next.”
  • Set a new pattern, confirm, and your phone will unlock with the new pattern.

  • You can follow a similar process if you've forgotten your PIN.

Method 2: Use Android Smart Lock (Android 5.0 and Above)

The Smart Lock feature can automatically unlock your phone when you’re in trusted locations or connected to paired devices.

    Steps to Enable Smart Lock:

  • Go to Settings > Security & location > Smart Lock.
  • Enter your PIN, password, or pattern.
  • Choose from options like On-body detection, Trusted places, Trusted devices, or Voice Match.

  • Quick Overview of Smart Lock Options:

  • On-body detection: Keeps the phone unlocked while it’s on you.
  • Trusted places: Keeps the phone unlocked within a chosen location radius.
  • Trusted devices: Keeps the phone unlocked when paired with a trusted Bluetooth device.
  • Voice Match: Unlocks the phone with a voice command, although this can be less secure.

  • Method 3: Use a Third-Party App (Samsung Example)

Many smartphone brands have their own security features. Samsung’s “Find My Mobile” allows remote unlocking if you have a Samsung account.

    Steps:

  • Go to Find My Mobile and sign in with your Samsung account.
  • Select “Lock my screen” and enter a new PIN.
  • Click “Lock” to set the new PIN, then use it to unlock your phone.

  • Method 4: Boot Into Safe Mode to Disable Third-Party Lock Apps

If a third-party app is locking your screen, booting into Safe Mode can temporarily disable it.

    Steps:

  • Access the power menu from the lock screen and long-press “Power off.”
  • Select “OK” to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Once in Safe Mode, uninstall the third-party lock app or clear its data.
  • Restart your phone to exit Safe Mode.

  • Method 5: Crash the Lock Screen (Android 5.0 to 5.1)

For devices running Android 5.0 to 5.1, a unique method involves crashing the lock screen.

    Steps:

  • Tap “Emergency Call” on the lock screen, then enter 10 asterisks (*).
  • Copy and paste the asterisks repeatedly until you can’t highlight the characters anymore.
  • Go back to the lock screen, open the camera app, and pull down the notification panel.
  • Open Settings, paste the asterisks in the password field, and continue until the lock screen crashes.

  • Note: This method may not work on devices with recent Android versions or third-party secure lock screens.

Method 6: Perform a Factory Reset

If access is all that matters and you’re okay with erasing all data, a factory reset is your last resort.

    Steps:

  • Turn off the device, then use button combinations to access the boot menu (typically Power + Volume up + Home).
  • Use the volume keys to select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and confirm with the Power button.
  • Allow the reset to complete, which will wipe all data and settings.

  • Note: Newer devices will require you to log in with the previously used Google account after the reset.

Forgetting your Android’s unlock code happens to the best of us, but one of these methods should help you regain access quickly. If you’ve tried any of these methods or know of others, share your experience or tips. Found this guide helpful? Pass it along to friends and family who might benefit!
