United will welcome Amorim to Old Trafford next Monday. Some supporters are keen for the highly-rated tactician to bring some of his Sporting stars with him.
And in a poll of Express Sport readers, Gyokeres was the overwhelming favourite. 68 per cent of voters want United to sign the former forward, who has been a revelation since his switch to Portugal in the summer of 2023.
Gyokeres is Europe's top scorer in 2024 and has bagged seven in his last two matches. The 26-year-old has already scored 16 goals in only 10 matches in the Portuguese top-flight this season, building on a sensational first season in which he netted a staggering 43 goals across all competitions.
But Amorim by insisting that Gyokeres will remain in Portugal until at least the end of the season. If they do pursue a move for the player, the Red Devils will face fierce competition from Premier League and European rivals.
Asked about a potential transfer for Gyokeres, Amorim said: "No, no no. I cannot be funny with that. In this moment it was tough for me to leave, if I am starting joking about that with your cameras I have problems. This is my city, this is my country so I will respect [that].
"Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else."
But even if a deal for Gyokeres is not attainable, United could target some of his Sporting team-mates. Of the United fans polled, 13 per cent said they would sign highly-rated defender Goncalo Inacio.
Seven per cent said they wanted to sign his defensive colleague Ousmane Diomande. Six per cent apiece said they would sign Pedro Goncalves or the former Tottenham ace Marcus Edwards.
United will need to shape a team in Amorim's image. The 39-year-old has almost exclusively used a 3-4-3 formation during his coaching career and there are doubts over whether the Red Devils' current squad has the personnel to adopt that system.
